The Arab Community Conference in the United Kingdom has issued a statement mourning the passing of the prominent Jordanian journalist Jamil Azar, who passed away in London on Saturday, 3 January 2026, at the age of 89.
In its statement, the conference described the late Azar as one of the most distinguished Arab media figures of the modern era, and an influential professional voice who contributed to strengthening the principles of responsible journalism and committed reporting based on accuracy, objectivity, and credibility.
The statement noted that Azar was born in the town of Al-Husn in the Irbid Governorate in 1937. He began his professional career at the BBC Arabic service, where he worked as a translator and news and current affairs presenter between 1965 and 1975. He later continued his work in news production and presentation in both Arabic and English, gradually advancing into senior editorial and leadership roles within the news department.
The conference further stated that the late journalist was among the early media professionals who contributed to the founding of Al Jazeera Satellite Channel at its launch on 30 July 1996, helping to establish its professional foundations and its well-known editorial slogan, “Opinion and the Other Opinion.”
The statement concluded with sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and his colleagues in the media community, praying that God Almighty may have mercy upon him and grant him eternal peace.
